The shortest and sharpest of the gospel narratives is the Gospel of Mark. Mark’s account of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ is conveyed with a sense of urgency and immediacy. In the first chapter alone, Mark uses the word “immediately” ten times as he recounts his story of our Lord’s life.
Mark describes for us a dynamic savior, always on the move, against all odds. In Jesus we discover a servant-leader whose number one priority is to serve and bring glory to his heavenly Father.
Early in the first chapter of Mark, the main theme of Jesus’ ministry is articulated—God’s kingdom is arriving. The kingdom of God is at hand!
More than any other gospel, the Gospel of Mark presents our Lord as the servant of our God.
The question for us as Christ-followers is simple—
How will I respond in service to my King?
Starting this fall and continuing in spring 2021, we come to the book of Mark asking God how we can serve him—like Christ did—in our church, in our community, in our nation, and in our world.
